As I turned around after a delivery, I see a massive shape burst out from the foliage and land atop the Fence. Damn near jumped out of my skin. We stared at each other for awhile, and I h ad to remind myself both that I like cats, and that h e’s more afraid of me than I am of him.
I’m not sure how well it translates in the pictures, but what a brute . I had a massive 3 0 pound Maine C oone at one point , and the spotted guy above looked significantly bigglier.
Is this an exotic domesticated breed that costs tens of thousands? An O celot? Amur Leopard? This was right on the edge of a heavily forested mountain range.

Trash pandas are the most lovable of pests. Bless her heart, it’s been thirty plus years now and my grandma keeps leaving out food and water for them. I know i t’s terrible to feed them , but... Seeing the babies show up year after year is about as adorable as it gets

I’ve never seen a bobcat that close. There was one that hung out around the old neighborhood occasionally at night(small exurb subdivision surrounded by open desert for many miles on three sides), but it always took off whenever anyone was around. I spotted it a couple of times when walking the dogs later at night (it had something of a musky smell that would get the doggos all excited when it was in the area), but both times was at distance coming around a corner and it took off immediately. Some part of me wants to say an animal control officer and/or a biologist might have some concerns about one that doesn’t scatter at the sight of person.

Pretty sure that’s a Lamborghini dude. I saw one closing a gate one day and it was cute as heck but make no mistake there is a no pet sign on that kitty. The one I saw spit and hissed at me. But it’s hard to take it seriously.

Once when I was a courier I was making a delivery to an office down in the Tech Center, and I got startled in the lobby by a raccoon. It was the pet of someone in the office there. I’ve never gone from “OH SHIT” to “OMG CUTE” that quickly in my life.

Looking at the mapped range, I can understand why the NE corridor isn’t included, but what’s going on along shores of lake Erie and along the Illinois Wisconsin border to keep them away?

Check with your local DNR. In several states sightings of bob cats are rare enough that they actually ask to be informed of any confirmed sightings. They may be extra interested if it was seen in an urban area. Their website should tell you if they want to know and how to report it.

Very cool. The “they’re more afraid of me” principle doesn’t really apply to cats. My old boss in Tucson got fucked up by a non- human wildcat. Ambushed him in his backyard.

Ooof. Yeah, a moose would line up terribly with the Miata. For both parties.

I wish I’d stayed there a bit longer. I walked towards him (only way out of the complex) and he bolted.
Cougars are relatively common around here. You always here how they stalk people and prey, staying in their blinds pot. I’ve seen bears out on various trails, but one of the bigger cats would sure be something.

That area doesn’t have much forest coverage, which I’m sure is part of it :
Obviously, there’s a huge band in the middle of the country like that though, so it can’t be the only factor.

I do wish they were able to be domesticated. They’re pretty cute. But way too troublesome for their own good.

We have a lot of them up here. They can get somewhat used to people. We’ve got one living between several buildings on one of the mesas at work. I’ve seen it a few times and even got into a starting contest with it one afternoon from about 10 feet away. It ran when I got closer. I haven’t seen it in a while but i t’s still around because it’s been shitting on the sidewalk. I how concerning that is depends on where you are. Around here animal control has their hands too full with bears and packs of coyotes wandering around town to worry much about bobcats.

That’s a bobcat. They are actually pretty common throughout most of the US but tend to stay away from people. This situation where you saw one - urban edge next to a forest is probably where humans interact with them most. I used to live in a subdivision in Texas that backed up to a 12,000 acre protected natural area and we would see Bobcats wander out from there into the streets and backyards now and then. That behavior of starting at you then eventually running away seems pretty typical of the encounters myself and my neighbors had.

The bobcats and coyotes that showed up in the old neighborhood weren’t all bad. There was a feral cat problem that got a whole lot better after that bobcat started hanging around. I’m guessing those two facts aren’t unrelated. My doggos also took care of a couple of those feral cats that they caught in backyard, but that wasn’t really a good scenario for anyone involved.

My in-laws live in Phoenix in one of those neighborhoods with big cluster mailboxes that backs up to a canal . The mailboxes are always plastered with missing cat signs that aren’t unrelated to the coyotes roaming the canals at night.

That certainly happened there, too.

That does make some sense. Even in suburban Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton I know there's enough forest or areas of thick under growth to where I could believe something like this could make a go of it..
